The community of P.224Q continuously develops and refines their educational practices supporting their beliefs that students learn best when: · They are taught through well-planned targeted, and differentiated lessons designed to give all students access to the curriculum and accelerate their learning · When they are presented with learning activities related to a lesson that challenge their thinking and give multiple opportunities for application of material taught · When they are given immediate meaningful feedback and opportunities to self-assess · When they are taught in an environment where they feel safe to learn and take risks to develop their understanding

Letters from Principal Jamie

Dear Parents,

I want to take this opportunity to welcome your child to summer school 2025. We are committed to

providing continuity of services and educational programs as mandated on your child’s IEP to the

best of our ability. The following is an overview of policies and procedures that are in effect during

summer school. Please keep this information easily available for reference.

Summer School Locations:

· P224@ 186 students will attend PS186Q

· P224@ 205 students will attend PS186Q

· P224@ 314 students will attend PS186Q

· P224@ 266 students will attend PS266Q

· ALL INCLUSION Students will be at PS186Q

· P224@ 26 students will attend PS186Q

· P224@ 710 students will attend P710 site

Staff

This summer most of the teaching staff is from the P224 organization (with very few from outside

organizations), and teachers will send you a letter to introduce themselves at the beginning of

school.

Bussing

As you know, bussing can often be problematic. Please get in touch with OPT 718-784-3313 if:

• You have any issues with a bus arriving late A.M. or P.M.

• You have problems with the driver or matron.

• You need to know the location of your child’s bus.

• There is a problem with the air conditioning.

OPT will give you a complaint number and try to correct the problem. The school will not know

any of the information you are requesting. We can follow up for you only if you already have a

complaint number.

As we prepare for warmer weather, parents need to note the capacity and limits of school bus air

conditioning systems: Climate control systems on school buses can only cool a vehicle to

approximately 15-20 degrees below the outside temperature; therefore, if it is 100 degrees outside,

the bus can only be expected to cool to about 80 degrees. For some students who are medically

fragile and/or sensitive to temperature changes, it may be in the student’s best interest not to ride

the bus on extremely hot days—the decision as to whether a student rides or not will remain with

the parent. Check the weather for the day before the bus comes, and if they feel it will be too hot to

ride the bus either in the morning or afternoon, they may decide to keep the child home. Please

inform the school immediately if you decide to keep your child home. All bus companies have

been given written notification reminding them to ensure all vehicles have functioning vents and

cooling systems where required. In addition, students with specific medical needs can be moved

closer to the front of the vehicle if that part of the bus is cooler.

Pick-up and Drop-off Procedures

The school day is from 8:00-2:30. You should have received information from the Office of Pupil

Transportation informing you of your child’s bus number and pick-up and drop-off times in your

NYCSA. If you are bringing your child to school, you must sign your child in and wait for a staff

member to come and bring your child to class. Do not hand your child over to a security guard.

You must park your car and bring the child into the building. Do not double park or block

driveways. Police will be ticketing cars outside the school buildings this summer. In addition, you

are only permitted to enter the building by the main doors where the security guards are present.

If you are picking your child up, please follow the same procedures. Let the school know before

12:00 PM that you are picking up. Then come to the office and sign your child out. All students

must be picked up by 2:15 PM. All staff will leave at 2:30 PM, so please leave yourself time for

parking and traffic.

Attendance Procedures

Standard Assessment students that received letters must attend summer school. All other students

attend voluntarily. However, the purpose of a 12-month school year is to allow students continuous

learning, so we encourage every child to take advantage of this program. Once a student comes to

school, we are responsible for their attendance. Please continue to contact the school as you did

during the year, early in the morning, to let us know if your child will be absent. Otherwise,

someone from our school will call and log the reason for the absence. If you plan to keep your child

out of school for an extended time for vacation, camp, family emergencies, etc., contact the school

as soon as possible for planning purposes.

Trips

There will be some trips over the summer. It is imperative that a trip permission slip is filled out for

every trip and returned a few days before the date of the trip. We cannot take permission over the

phone. A student must have a permission slip signed on the day of the trip to be permitted to go.

Students are very disappointed when this happens. If your child needs a trip nurse, you will receive

a letter explaining the procedures if a nurse is unavailable.

Car Wash Wednesdays and Water Play

All students will be able to participate in water play each day. On Wednesdays, we will run a car

wash where students will have assigned jobs and raise funds for the café, bakeshop, Cricut room,

and fall carnival.

Contact Numbers

The following are contact numbers for summer:

P224 @ 710 (718) 225-8667

P224 @ 266Q (718) 479-4322

Dear Staff, Students, and Families,

As we approach the holiday season, we want to take a moment to express our heartfelt gratitude to each of you for your contributions to our school community. Together, we have accomplished so much this year, and I am excited to reflect on a few of the highlights that make our school a truly special place.

We are proud to share the news of our well-developed rating on the quality review! This recognition reflects the hard work, dedication, and collaboration of our staff, students, and families. It is a testament to our commitment to fostering a supportive and academically enriching environment for all.

This year, our Spirit Week was a huge success! It was incredible to see students and staff come together, showcasing their creativity, enthusiasm, and school pride. From themed outfits to friendly competitions, the energy and sense of community were truly inspiring.

Our Family Fun Nights and Parent Days in the Classroom have been another highlight of our year. These events brought us together to celebrate learning, build connections, and create lasting memories. The participation and engagement from families have been overwhelming, and we look forward to continuing these meaningful traditions.

As we head into the holiday break, I encourage everyone to take time to rest, recharge, and enjoy time with loved ones. Whether you are celebrating, reflecting, or simply relaxing, may your holiday season be filled with joy, good health, and happiness.

Thank you for being an integral part of our vibrant school community. We look forward to an exciting and productive new year ahead!

Warmest wishes,

Jamie, Stacy, John, Mary, Laura

As we embrace the beauty of fall, we are reminded of the power of transformation and renewal.  Just as the leaves change their colors and gracefully fall to the ground, this season encourages us to reflect on our own journeys and the growth we experience along the way. Thank you for your collaboration and the great work we continue to do.  This is something we are truly thankful for this season!

Respectfully,

Jamie Allen

Important Message

Attendance:

  • Students are expected to attend school every day.

  • 95% attendance is recommended by the P. 224Q Attendance Committee. Good attendance has a high correlation to student success.

  • Parents are expected to call the school when a student is absent to inform us of the reason. If we do not hear from you, the school will contact your home.

  • A written note must accompany the child upon his or her return to school, as required by education law.  A doctor’s note can excuse a student from an unauthorized absence.

  • An attendance teacher will be notified if a student is absent for three or more days and we are unable to contact the parent. In addition, after three days you will need to contact the bus company to reinstate pick up.

  • If a student is going out of town for an extended period you are required to put in writing where the student is going, for how long they will be away and leave a phone number where contact can be made even if it is out of the country.
